Meet the Winemaker – Savaterre
Savaterre has a faithful following among critics and sommeliers around the world, having been compared to the noble Grand Cru wines of Burgundy and winning countless accolades.
Having nurtured a passion for fine wine over many years, winemaker and owner Keppell Smith decided to take the inevitable step of starting his own winery. He searched Australia for the best terroirs and fell in love with Beechworth, Victoria.
“The region is renowned for premium wines, with Savaterre at the apex of these producers. The fruit is farmed organically, the wines made with no additives aside a small amount of sulphur. The resulting whites and reds are recognised as cult wines of exceptional pedigree.” – Mike Benny
Tickets are $159.00 +BF and include 5 courses with matching Savaterre wines. Bookings essential.

He spent 5 years at the The Australian Wine Research Institute, is a highly sought-after wine judge whose writing has been featured in Jancis Robinson’s Oxford Companion and was named Australian Society of Viticulture and Oenology Winemaker of the Year 2020. Just a couple of accolades to speak of then!

He undertakes a diverse range of modern, innovative and traditional winemaking techniques, balancing creativity with technical precision and customer and consumer expectations. He has sought to think outside the box, finding innovative ways to deal with challenging vintages.” – ASVO citiation
It is not just the breadth of experience that makes Leske’s career so impressive, but his commitment and generosity in sharing his wisdom. “I have worked with so many talented people during my career who have given generously of their time, knowledge and skills.
